Guided Cemetery Walk at Paltaniemi Cemetery
Last year, Kajaanin Matkailuoppaat tourist guides did the first guided walking tours in the Paltaniemi cemetery in cooperation with the Kajaani parish. Also this summer, we will get to see this cemetery chosen as the cemetery of 2021. The Paltaniemi cemetery was commissioned in 1975 and the Valon Kappeli chapel, designed by Architect Juha Paldanius, was completed in 1995. There is a crematorium connected to the chapel and the cemetery also has a place to remember those buried elsewhere.
The people presented on the tour have been selected from well-known representatives of various fields and influencers of their time. We get to know e.g. to the life story of two MPs from Kajaani. We also visit the graves of two advisors, the home industry advisor and the education advisor, and we hear from tour guides who have done significant tourism work. Information about the people presented on the tour has been obtained from writings and by interviewing their relatives.
The cemetery walk starts at 18:00 from the chapel, address: Siltalantie 18, Paltaniemi, with organ music and an introduction to the chapel.
The duration of the walking tour is about 1.5 hours. Please wear sturdy shoes. In case of thunderstorms, the tour will not take place.

Excuse Me! Are You a Popstar? -Exhibition
“Excuse Me! Are You a Popstar?” is a Belgian born photographer Stefan de Batselier’s exhibition about rock- and pop-stars.
De Batselier (1963–2021) studied in Brussels Sint-Lukas School of Arts, from which he graduated as a photographer in 1987. Soon after graduation de Batselier moved to London, where he worked 20 years as a music photographer for multiple different record companies, such as Sony and Universal, along with different music magazines. De Batselier visited Finland for the first time in 1997 and fell in love with the country right away. In 2009 he moved to Joensuu and a few years later moved to the countryside in Niittylahti.
Stefan de Batselier’s aim in photography was always a beautiful, preferably a classical black-and-white portrait photo, no matter who was in front of the camera. These photographs aren’t just about rock or pop, but about interesting people like Björk, Iggy Pop or Yoko Ono. High-contrast, soft and grainy black-and-white pictures often have a hint of a dreamy atmosphere. In de Batselier’s opinion, overly static, sharp and well-lit images do not correspond to reality. He didn’t use a tripod. This brought a conscious risk of failure to the shooting moments, because perfection was not interesting to him.
“Excuse Me! Are You a Popstar?” -exhibition consists of 60 photos, most of which are portrait photos, but there are also band photos belonging to the music world with a proper rock attitude. The photos of the exhibition have been published in the legendary New Musical Express magazine, and there are also other music photos, such as de Batselier’s years in Finland. The exhibition has previously been on display at the North Karelian Museum in 2019.
Exhibition ends on Wednesday the 14th of September.
